We knew we had to do this when we heard the charge from Reverend William Barber, II at Evansville‘s annual Celebration of Human Rights awards dinner this month. Mental Health Matters wanted to bring an effort that brought together communities that are in harm’s way under this administration. Memorial Baptist Church was thinking likewise, knowing that too much faith, works, perseverance, and love had been poured out for generations to secure voting rights, civil rights, and human rights to yield on the power of our votes. We quickly saw the power in combining our effort. Youth participation was a key part of our march. Harrison High School’s Evolution Step Team led the way, set the vibe, and locked in our purpose. We were all there for their future and for their now. We were there because we know that OUR votes = OUR voices. We were there to take the power out of our pockets. We were there for each other and our tomorrow.
