Participants will gather at the Oro Valley Community Center, 10555 N. La Cañada Drive, and walk together to the ballot drop box at the Oro Valley Library, carrying their ballots and signs about voting, democracy and civic participation.
The event has a simple goal: remind voters that they can cast their ballots early and demonstrate publicly that the right to vote should be protected and exercised. Organizers expect participants to carry voting-themed signs as they walk along La Cañada Drive, creating a visible reminder to passing motorists that early voting is underway.
The march comes just over a week after early voting begins for Arizona’s November 3 general election. Organizers chose the Oro Valley Library because it is one of Pima County’s official ballot drop-box locations, giving participants an opportunity to turn a public demonstration of support for voting rights into the act of voting itself.
“Voting is usually something we do individually and quietly. We want to make it visible,” said Amy Gosla, co-leader of Indivisible Tucson Action Alliance. “When neighbors walk together to cast their ballots, we’re reminding one another that voting is a right, a responsibility and something worth standing up for.”
Organizers especially hope to reach people who reliably vote but may not yet be thinking about casting their ballots early. Those who have already voted are also encouraged to join the march! No ballot required. Come walk with your neighbors and help make voting visible.
“We want people driving by to see us and think, ‘My ballot is sitting at home. I should vote it,’” Gosla added. “Voting early is one concrete thing each of us can do right now.”
