Bishop William J. Barber, II, President & Sr. Lecturer, Repairers of the Breach, and Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove, Board Chair, Repairers of the Breach, stand alongside faith and moral leaders in Los Angeles for a launch event to kick off “Operation Liberty,” a national rapid-response and civic empowerment initiative to document ICE actions and help provide support to impacted families.

Following Moral Actions In Los Angeles, We Head South

There are powerful forces working to divide us.

Immigrants and latinos are being racially profiled and pulled off the streets by ICE agents; a growing number of cities across the nation are being militarized; and, as of this moment, 51,000 people could die next year as a result of lack of healthcare coverage if cuts from the Big, Bad, Deadly, Destructive Budget Bill stand.

As Bishop William J. Barber, II, President & Sr. Lecturer of Repairers of the Breach, said during our recent Mass Meeting For Moral Witness in Los Angeles: “This is a crisis of civilization, not just a crisis of democracy.”

Repairers of the Breach has been working across the nation organizing diverse people and communities to nonviolently resist and push policy makers to end policy violence and support a moral agenda that prioritizes the needs of the poor and other marginalized communities.

This past Friday (Sept. 19th) we organized a Mass Meeting For Moral Witness in Los Angeles, to amplify the plight of our Latino and immigrant neighbors, who are being targeted by ICE agents. We know that the same forces leading deadly raids against our immigrant neighbors are the same forces attacking the poor, suppressing the vote, and perpetuating other forms of injustice.

On Saturday, Sept. 20th, Bishop Barber joined faith and moral leaders at Mac Arthur Park in Los Angeles for the launch of “Operation Liberty”–a national rapid-response and civic empowerment initiative to document ICE actions and help provide support to impacted families. “Liberty Vans” staffed with trained volunteers, lawyers, clergy, veterans and videographers are being deployed across the city to document and shine a light on immoral ICE raids.

“The answer to our present crisis is not going to come from some messiah candidate who’s going to save us while we just sit down,” Bishop Barber said during the launch event. “It’s not going to come from a single election. The answer to our authoritarian crisis is already among us. It is you, everyday people, who have discovered that we can let our light shine together.”

In case you missed it, you can watch both the Mass Meeting and the Operation Liberty launch event below.

Now, we need your support as we prepare to launch Moral Monday Actions across the South.

On Monday, Sept. 29th, Repairers of the Breach is leading Moral Monday actions at U.S. Senate offices across the South in opposition to the Big, Bad, Deadly, Destructive Budget Bill recently passed by Congress. We are demanding U.S. Senators to take immediate action to ensure vital programs are available for the poor, including healthcare access, SNAP benefits, and other social safety net programs.  We will carry symbolic caskets commemorating the 51,000 people who will die next year from lack of healthcare if these budget cuts stand.

If you can’t join in person, you can visit the Repairers of the Breach website and digital channels for updates about Moral Monday actions across the south, including a livestream from Alabama, where Bishop William J. Barber, II, President & Sr. Lecturer of Repairers of the Breach, will be attending.
