On April 27, 2025 Bishop William J. Barber, II, President & Sr. Lecturer of Repairers of the Breach stood with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and U.S. Senator Cory Booker on the steps of the U.S. Capitol when the Big Ugly Bill before Congress was first introduced. When they stood to rally in opposition, the members adopted the language of the moral movement.
On July 3, 2025 Leader Jeffries held the floor for the longest speech in the history of the US House of Representatives and turned to a moral framing at the end and talked about the hypocrisy of those who “p-r-a-y” on Sundays but then come to Congress and “p-r-e-y” on the most vulnerable.
From March 31 to April 1, 2025 U.S. Senator Booker concluded his 25-hour speech that broke Strom Thurmond’s record for the longest filibuster in US history, stating, “This is a moral moment. It’s not left or right; it’s right or wrong.”
This is the language and framing used by the Moral Movement to organize folks from the hood to the holler in Kentucky. Moral messaging has the power to galvanize a coalition broader than political parties.
