Bishop William J. Barber, II, President & Sr. Lecturer of Repairers of the Breach, speaks in Jackson, MS during "Moral Mondays: A Southern Call to Conscience."

Twelve Southern States Stand Together To Reject “Big, Ugly, Deadly, Destructive” Budget Bill

Across the South, impacted people, moral activists and moral leaders came together on Monday, Aug. 18, to tell their U.S. Senators and members of Congress that we will not stand down until we have a moral budget and moral public policies that respond to the urgent needs of the poor.

Moral Mondays: A Southern Call to Conscience” was a national rebuke of the President’s Big, Ugly, Deadly, Destructive Budget Bill, which has authorized the largest transfer of wealth in American history from the poor to the rich. Led nationally by Repairers of the Breach, state leaders coordinated actions in twelve southern states including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. Coffins were carried to symbolize the death that will result from this bill, including the over 51,000 people who could die next year from lack of healthcare as a result of this legislative evil passed by the American Congress.

Below are a few press highlights in response to Monday’s actions.
