SELMA, AL - To mark the 58th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, Bishop William J. Barber II, President of Repairers of the Breach and Co-Chair of the Poor People's Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival, will deliver the keynote sermon at Brown Chapel AME Church — the church where civil rights activists began their march from Selma to Montgomery in 1965.
During his sermon, Bishop Barber will address the need for a renewed federal commitment to furthering the work civil rights activists fought for on Bloody Sunday including voting rights, poverty and investment in rural communities.
Following the sermon, Bishop Barber will meet with community activists, faith leaders and allies at the historic Edmund Pettus Bridge, to further uplift the demand that elected leaders take action to further civil rights nationwide.

Additionally, on Saturday, March 5, at 5:30 pm CT, Bishop Barber will participate in a mass meeting hosted by the Alabama Poor People’s Campaign at Ward Chapel AME Church in Selma. The mass meeting will also be livestreamed, and comes just days after civil rights activists, faith leaders and Alabama electeds penned an open letter to President Biden and members of Congress, demanding that if he or other politicians visit Selma to commemorate Bloody Sunday, they come with more than empty platitudes. They must come with a plan to take immediate action on voting rights, living wages and rural economic investment, in the name of furthering what activists fought for when they marched the 54-miles from Selma to Montgomery in 1965.
Signers write, "Selma is sacred ground. It is, in a very real sense, the delivery room where the possibility of a true democracy was born. It is no place to play or to be for political pretense. Either you're serious or not. If you're coming, come on Sunday, the actual day of remembrance. If you're coming, come with a commitment to fight for what these people were willing to give their lives for."
