Since its founding in 2015, Repairers of the Breach has worked every day to build and support grassroots power to combat immoral and illegal policies that disproportionately impact the over 140 million poor and low-wealth people across the U.S. Through prayer-protests-rallies, the media, social media, and other channels, we work to amplify a moral message for the nation. In case you missed it, below are six recent updates from the Moral Movement.
1. Moral Voices At Moral Mondays
Repairers of the Breach is organizing and leading “Moral Mondays In D.C.” prayer-protest-rallies to provide a moral witness against an immoral budget. Sloan Meek and Suvya Carrol, disabilities rights activists and music artists based in North Carolina, recently spoke at our June 2nd gathering. They shared about how proposed Medicaid cuts by extremists would impact their lives and the lives of people with disabilities. You can learn more about these activists by watching this powerful video –produced by the Golden family–on Our Moral Moments Substack.
2. ICYMI: “The Illegal War of a Would-Be King”
Bishop William J. Barber, II, President and Sr. Lecturer of Repairers of the Breach, recently released a statement about the Middle East conflict. “Without the Congressional authorization that the Constitution requires, Donald Trump has dragged the United States into war with Iran,” he said. “The attack on Iran is a radical extension of Trump’s extreme notion that the office of the Presidency gives him power to do whatever he wants with the vast resources of the US government.” You can read his full comments here.
3. ICYMI: A Juneteenth Message From Bishop Barber
Bishop William J. Barber, II, President and Sr. Lecturer of Repairers of the Breach, was recently invited to join New Birth Missionary Baptist Church for their Juneteenth revival, the Uprising Summit, in Atlanta. “Though the white supremacist forces in Texas conspired to keep enslaved people from getting the memo about their freedom until June 19, 1865, they knew then and we must know now that no power on earth can bind a free people forever,” he said. You can watch his full sermon below.
4. ICYMI: “Trump Won’t Be King–Unless We Bow” OpEd, Newsweek
Bishop William J. Barber, II, President and Sr. Lecturer of Repairers of the Breach, and Leah Greenberg, co-Executive Director of Indivisible, co-authored the OpEd, “Trump Won’t Be King–Unless We Bow,” in Newsweek to critique the administration’s hostility towards immigrants, the poor and marginalized communities. “We must maintain discipline, refuse to meet violence with violence, and keep our focus on an agenda that lifts all of us to higher ground,” they said. “If we do, the promise of the prophet [Daniel] is true for us as well: a force more powerful than any of our individual actions will come to stand with us in the fire. It is the force that propelled movements for abolition, women’s suffrage, labor rights, and civil rights throughout our history. It is the force of truth, love, and justice. And it is more powerful than any would-be king.” Read the full OpEd here.
5. What is the impact of the “Big Ugly Destructive Deadly” Bill?
Bishop William J. Barber, II, President and Sr. Lecturer of Repairers of the Breach, recently discussed the impact of the President’s “Big Ugly Destructive Deadly” Bill with Amy Goodman on Democracy Now. This bill proposes huge cuts to Medicaid and is a direct assault on the 140 million poor and low-wage people across the country. Watch the interview below.
