Inflation Reduction Act: Bishop Barber invited to White House
Bishop William J. Barber II to attend White House program making passage of Inflation Reduction Act
At the invitation of the White House, faith and moral leader Bishop William J. Barber II will attend a program Tuesday to mark the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act.
Bishop Barber, president and senior lecturer of Repairers of the Breach and co-chair of the Poor People's Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival, will attend the signing that begins at 3 p.m ET Tuesday, Sept. 13, at the White House.
Bishop Barber continues to call on Congress, regardless of party, to pass living wages for 50 million low-wage workers; to expand and protect voting rights and a deeper and broader commitment to fully address the issue of poverty. He also continues to push for a presidential-level meeting with poor and low-wage people, economists and moral and religious leaders.
While Repairers and the PPC:NCMR recognize and celebrate the IRA’s many historic policy steps, including those on healthcare and climate change, Bishop Barber also has criticized it because of environmental concessions made to gain the support of Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia. Those concessions include subsidies for constructing new pipelines and guarantees for new leasing of oil and gas drilling.
